Cabs in Philadelphia begin with a flag-drop fee of $2.70, then charge 23¢ for each 0.10 mile and 37.6 seconds of wait time thereafter. They're plentiful downtown and throughout Center City, especially along Broad, Walnut, Chestnut, and Market streets and near major hotels and travel hubs. At night, during prime-time hours, try your luck on a busy street corner or ask a hotel doorman to hail a taxi for you. Smartphone users can also download 215-Get-A-Cab, a free Android/iOS app that allows you to schedule pickups instantly. It saves you the trouble of getting stuck on hold with a dispatcher, a common occurrence on busy evenings. All Philadelphia cabs accept credit cards, though most drivers prefer cash transactions. The standard tip for drivers is 20% of the total fare. Smartphone-powered ride-sourcing services, like Uber and Lyft, have a strong presence in Philadelphia in addition to the cabs sanctioned by the PPA, which regulates taxis and limos.
