TRAVEL TIPS

Car Travel

Marrakesh is in Morocco's center, so it connects well by road with all other major destinations. Most of these roads are good, two-lane highways with hard, sandy shoulders for passing. There is a new freeway connecting Marrakesh to Casablanca in the north and Agadir to the southwest.

Within the Marrakesh medina, driving is not recommended. Cars can pass through some of the medina's narrow alleys, but not all, and unless you know the lay of the land you risk getting stuck and being hard-pressed to perform a U-turn. Outside the medina, in the nouvelle ville and suburbs, traffic is frenetic and locals freely admit that stoplights and lane markings are purely decorative and rarely observed. It can be hazardous to drive here as well.
