TRAVEL TIPS

When to Go

Atlanta isn't called "Hotlanta" for nothing—in the late spring and summer months the mosquitoes feast, and temperatures can reach a sticky and humid 99ºF (thankfully, almost every place in the city is air-conditioned). July 4 weekend can be particularly hectic, due to the influx of runners for the annual 10K Peachtree Road Race. Labor Day weekend also sees major crowds thanks to dozens of popular national festivals, including Dragon*Con and the Decatur Book Festival. The best time to visit is in fall and early winter. When many other cities are beginning to get cold and gray, Atlanta typically maintains a steady level of sunshine and cool breezes. Spring is also a beautiful time to visit with azaleas and dogwoods in bloom. Airfares are fairly reasonable at most times of the year, given that the city is a transportation hub and most Atlanta attractions aren't seasonal.
