TRAVEL TIPS

Safety

Despite what Chileans claim, Santiago is no more dangerous than most other large cities and considerably less so than many other Latin American capitals. As a rule of thumb, watch out for your property, preferably keeping physical contact with it, but unless you venture into some of the city's outlying neighborhoods, your physical safety is unlikely to be at risk. Beware of pickpockets particularly in the Centro, near Los Leones metro, and on buses. Don’t keep valuables in outside pockets, and exercise caution when using smartphones in very busy areas.

Visitors should be wary of parking attendants. During the day, they should only charge what's on their portable meters when you collect the car but, at night, they ask for money—usually 1,000 pesos—in advance. This is a racket but, for your car's safety, it's better to comply.
