12 Days, Irish Sea To Iceland

The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean in the world. It lies between North and South America in the west and Europe and Africa in the east.

Located in eastern Northern Ireland on Belfast Lough, an inlet of the north channel of the Irish Sea, Belfast is the capital and largest city in the country.

Those who saw action in France during World War II will remember that Cherbourg was the primary supply port for the Allies during the Normandy invasion. Its first incarnation as a naval base was under Napoleon. Today, the largest port of the Cotentin Peninsula is gateway to ne of the most photographed sights in France-lofty Mont St-Michel. Begun by Bishop Aubert of Avranches in 708, the slender steeple piercing the firmament is a powerful statement of Norman/Romanesque
religious fervor. Around it, the immense Monastery and Cloisters buttress the Church in massive walls of stone reaching all the way down to the sea. Surrounded by treachous quiksands and a 50-foot tide, it must have been quite an adventure to reach the Mont in the days before the causeway!

Nearby St. George’s Hall, constructed in an age when size and grandeur were of paramount importance, is widely
regarded as the finest neo-classical building in Europe. The Town Hall is the jewel of Liverpool’s historic buildings with its Golden Minerva sitting proudly atop the golden dome. Both of these magnificent buildings have been refurbished and feature a programme of events, public openings, exhibitions, conferences and business and private functions.
